Features Compared

  • Design

  • Without mincing words, these are some of the finest smartwatches you’ll find on the market currently. Each of these three has got a sophisticated design that defines an outstanding smartwatch. Which includes lightweight, slim, compact design and polish finish. Each of these three is attractive with a charming appearance that tends to make its presence known.

However, the Apple Watch 5 gives more viewing area than the Versa 2 and even more than the Active 2 with 1.4 inches and 1.3 inches display respectively. And that’s something to cheer about especially while on the go and you need to catch a glance of your watch face.

Worthy of note is the Mystyle app that comes with the Active 2 which allows you to customize your watch face to match the color of your cloth. It does achieve this by simply allowing you to take a picture of what you’re wearing and in seconds it changes the watch face to match your outfit.

Going by navigation, Watch 5 and Active 2 are more advanced than the Versa 2. While Samsung has reintroduced the rotating bezel found on older models, but this time a digital bezel on the Active 2. The digital bezel is iconic and quite innovative, and no doubt makes the Active 2 a very easy to access device. So also is the Watch 5 which features the same digital crown with hepatic feedback as seen on the now discontinued Apple Watch 4. The hepatic feedback mechanism offers a click-like feel as you scroll the digital crown which makes it easier to find your favorite features.

Versa 2 is only available in the lightweight aluminum material which is great, but the Active 2 is available in aluminum and stainless steel. The stainless steel model supports LTE connectivity and is a more durable material than the aluminum, while also having that classic appearance like traditional watches which is a design the Swiss purists will appreciate.

So also is the Watch 5 which is available in aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and ceramics. The price goes up in that order.

  • Media/Storage

  • All three devices allow you take your favorite tracks with you which you can listen to on the go, but the Watch 5 allows you to take far more files. The Watch 5 comes with a massive 32GB which is 8x more than the Active 2 and Versa 2 with 4GB each.

Moreover, Watch 5 and Active 2 have loudspeakers alongside the microphone built into all three devices. This allows you to play your media files anywhere and makes the voice assistant feature on these two quite more productive.

Amazon’s Alexa is available on the Versa 2, while Samsung’s Bixby and Apple’s Siri are the respective voice assistants on the Active 2 and Watch 5.

Samsung added a social engagement feature to Active 2. This feature allows you to like and share your favorite social media features, and as well allows you to watch Youtube videos right on the Active 2.

  • Cellular Connectivity

  • Both the Watch 5 and Active 2 have cellular models that support cellular connectivity which isn’t available on the Versa 2. As a result, these are standalone smartwatches that allow you make and receive calls right from these two. So, you can choose to go out without your phone, and still stay connected to all that matters to you.

  • Fitness Tracking

  • From official press statements from tech giants in the smartwatch industry, it’s clear that fitness and wellness tracking is at the front burner, and is most likely to remain this way for years to come as fitness awareness continues to surge among the world population. Mind you, these devices shouldn’t take the place of your doctor, you must always seek the doctor’s advice.

Each of these three builds on its predecessor with additional fitness tracking features. Samsung added swimming to auto-tracking in the Active 2, while the Versa 2 features onscreen workout mode that coaches you through your favorite moves (It’s subscription-based).

Apple, on the other hand, added menstrual cycle tracking that lets you log your period and can help you detect changes. Also new is the hearing tracking that’ll alert you when the noise is too loud and harmful to your ears and the newly added compass that adds more insight into your location coordinates.

Both the Watch 5 and Versa 2 feature menstrual cycle tracking which the Active 2 lacks. The Watch 5 goes ahead to feature incidental fall detection that was introduced to the Watch 4. Watch 5 detects when a fall has occurred and will send a call to a preset emergency contact. It’s even better now with the international emergency calling that lets you call respective emergency contacts almost anywhere in the world.

ECG tracking is available on the Active 2 and Watch 5 which the Versa 2 lacks. With ECG tracking supported on these two, you can take instant ECG test right from your wrist which can help you detect atrial fibrillation – a form of irregular heart rhythm.

The Watch 5 and Active 2 have inbuilt GPS which the Versa 2 lacks. This makes these two better choices for tracking outdoor activities and allowing you to see your pace in real-time. Although you can still access GPS functions on Versa 2 by connecting to your phone GPS, this can be quite inconvenient especially while on the go.

Moreover, while the Active 2 features 39 sport modes out which its able to auto-track 7 of these, the Versa 2 features 15 sport modes and allows you to select activities to auto-track. The Watch 5 features the activity ring that learns more about you and is able to tell when it’s right to move, sit, or exercise. It also features several apps that include a diabetic app that tracks glucose intake.

On a general note, each of these three features stress tracking, heart rate monitoring, swim, steps, calories, and more.

  • Battery Life
  • Versa 2 has the longest battery life which is longer than the Active 2 with about 2-4 days and even longer than the Watch 5 with about 18 hours battery life on regular usage. This, of course, makes Versa 2 a better smartwatch for fitness enthusiasts involved in extreme workout activities.

Which is the Best Choice?

Clearly, each of these three is an outstanding smartwatch that’s made of top quality material and beautiful, loaded with features, a comprehensive activity tracker and a fair battery life to back it up.

The Apple Watch 5 with the widest display, yet compact, and also the slimmest has the most outstanding design, it also is loaded with features that make it a comprehensive smartwatch. Apple Watch 5 is the best choice if you own an iPhone.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 with digital rotating bezel, slim design and certified MIL-STD-810G is no doubt a premium smartwatch. It’s a more comprehensive and advanced smartwatch than the Versa 2.

The Versa 2 also with an outstanding design, loaded with features, and has the longest battery life, yet far more cheaper than the Active 2 and Watch 5 is a great bargain. It’s a comprehensive activity tracker, and a great choice for indoor activity tracking.

Our Pick

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is our preferred choice. It’s a comprehensive smartwatch with an outstanding design, loaded with features, plus a quite impressive battery life.
