Garmin Forerunner 245 vs Fitbit Versa 2 vs Fossil Gen 4 Sport Features Compared

  • Design

  • The Forerunner 245 and Gen 4 sport are moderately sized and compact, although the Versa 2 is smaller and as such a more compact wear that should look nice on smaller wrist. The Versa 2 is also quite slimmer than both the Forerunner 245 and Gen 4 sport which makes it sleeker and a more attractive wear.

As per display, Versa 2 has a slightly bigger display size than the other two which allows you to see more at a glance despite having the smallest case size.

And while transflective LCD display powers the display of the Forerunner 245, AMOLED is in charge of the Versa 2 and Gen 4 sport. The AMOLED display is more attractive and lively than the TFT of the Forerunner 245, although the TFT LCD is easier to read outdoors.

The Forerunner 245 doesn’t support touchscreen which is on the Versa 2 and Gen sport, this can make the later two quite easier to navigate, although it might misbehave when water touches on the screen.

Overall, these three look nice and decent enough, even though the Versa 2 has the most stylish and a more decent looking smartwatch.

  • Media

  • Each of these three has 4GB storage capacity that allows you to take your music with you. However, the Forerunner 245 lacks microphone that’s present on both the Versa 2 and Gen 4 sport. As a result, these later two allow you use the voice assistant feature.

Although, while Amazon Alexa is supported on the Versa 2, Google Assistant works it out on the Gen 4 sport. There’s still a debate on which is better between Alexa and Google Assistant. Both are outstanding in their respective ways, but the Google Assistant seems to be a better platform.

  • Fitness Tracking

  • It’s pertinent to state that each of these three is fitness-focused and well equipped to track your active life. However, the Versa 2 and Forerunner 245 are more comprehensive fitness trackers having more features than you’ll get from the Gen 4 sport.

Versa 2 offers 15 preloaded sport modes and allows you to select and auto-track your preferred activities. Also available on the Versa 2 is the onscreen workout that coaches you through your moves, including complete sleep cycle tracking and guided breathing sessions that can help return you back to calm. One of the new additions to the Versa 2 is a premium workout coach that offers plans to help you stay fit. You’ll have to subscribe to get this feature.

The Forerunner 245 being a GPS smartwatch is a great choice for runners and the best choice for tracking outdoor activities. It has inbuilt GPS which Versa 2 lacks as well as features that can help improve your running training. There’s the recovery feature that can help you become more productive without breaking down, including the accidental fall detection that sends your location to a preset emergency contact.

In other words, these three are nice fitness trackers, but the Versa 2 and Forerunner 245 have features that make these two more comprehensive fitness trackers than the Gen 4 sport with the Versa 2 being a better choice for indoor activity tracking and the Forerunner 245 a better choice for tracking outdoor activities.

  • Battery Life

No doubt each of these three has got a quite impressive battery life that lets you go more than a day on a single charge. However, the Forerunner 245 has a longer battery life than the Versa 2 and even longer than the Gen 4 sport.

The Forerunner 245 on smartwatch mode will last about a week which is very much impressive and a great choice for anyone involved in extreme workout activities. While the Versa 2 with longer battery life than its predecessor will last up to 5 days which is also very impressive when compared to the average smartwatch with 1-2days of battery life.

The Gen 4 sport won’t last as long as the other two, is expected to last just about a day or more on single usage. But, with the Snapdragon 3100 chip powering this device, it has battery management features that can elongate its battery life up to a week. Although, with the battery saver mode activated, Wear OS features are deactivated.

Which is the Best?

Clearly, these three are decent smartwatches and each is fitness-focused. However, the Versa 2 has the most stylish and premium design that leaves it with a more attractive and charming appearance.

The Fitbit Versa 2 with long battery life and loaded with lots of fitness tracking features is the best choice for indoor activity tracking, while the Forerunner 245 with quite longer battery life, inbuilt GPS with lots of fitness tracking features is the best choice for outdoor activity tracking and also a great choice for pro athletes looking to achieve more fitness goals.

Here’s how they stack up;

FITBIT VERSA 2 The most stylish and a comprehensive fitness tracker with a long battery life. The best choice for indoor activity tracking, and great choice for both men and women.
GARMIN FORERUNNER 245 An outstanding GPS fitness smartwatch with a very impressive long battery life. The best choice for outdoor activity tracking and pro athletes.
FOSSIL GEN 4 SPORT A decent alternative.

Our Pick

The Fitbit Versa 2 has an outstanding aesthetics and a long battery life that lets you go days on a single charge even while being moderately priced. It’s our preferred choice.
