Update Garmin has updated the Fenix 6 Series with the addition of the Fenix 6 Pro Solar and 6S Pro Solar. Remember, the Fenix Series was released last year with only the Fenix 6X Pro Solar having solar feature. Now, this feature has come to other members of the Fenix 6 Series; Fenix 6 Pro and 6S Pro. With a solar feature on these models, battery life is extended significantly. Moreover, Garmin has also added the following features to the Fenix 6 Series;
- Surfline Sessions which creates a video of every wave you ride in front of a Surfline camera, so you can watch them later and see how you did
- Climb activity profile that tracks indoor climbing metrics.
- Bouldering activity profile which is similar to indoor climb profile but for bouldering.
The much talked about successor to the Fenix 5 series has been released. It’s the Fenix 6 series – the latest multisport GPS smartwatches from Garmin. Six members make up the Fenix 6 lineup which are; 6, 6s, 6 pro, 6s pro, 6x pro, and 6x Pro solar – that’s six outstanding GPS smartwatches.
These six are further divided into two; the Basic (6 and 6s) and Pro (6 Pro, 6s Pro, 6x Pro, 6x pro solar) editions. The Basic editions lack onboard music storage, Wi-Fi, and map, all of which are available on the Pro editions.
Below are new features added to the Fenix 6 series,
- Garmin reduced the thickness size of the 42mm- 6s and 6s pro, 47mm-6 and 6 pro, and 51mm- 6x pro and 6x pro solar. The display size have also been increased except for the 42mm version which retained same display size as it predecessor.
- Added a new widget feature that’s similar to the Apple watch Infographic watch face. The widget feature allow you add up to 6 of your favorite features to the Fenix 6s and 6s pro, while the 6, 6 pro, 6x pro, and 6x pro solar get up to 8 data fields. New map display themes have been added, but are only available on the Pro editions.
- The Fenix 6 sets are more durable as they’ve been tested accordingly to the US military grade test standards for thermal, shock and water resistance.
- Each Pro edition of the Fenix 6 has 32GB storage capacity which is twice that of the Fenix 5 Plus ( the Basic editions don’t have onboard music storage).
- Pulse ox sensor is available on each member of the Fenix 6.
- Map with trendline popularity routing, ski resorts and PacePro have been added to the Pro editions.
- Incident detection introduced to the latest Forerunner series have also been added to all members of the Fenix 6.
- Underwater wrist based heart rate tracking have been added to each member of the Fenix 6.
- New battery management features that include the expedition mode seen on the MARQ series have also been added to the Fenix 6, including the battery saver mode that will see each member of the Fenix 6 last for weeks.Also new is solar charging supported on the 6x pro solar which uses solar energy to last a little longer.
Prices starts at $600 for the Fenix 6 and 6s, $700 for the 6 pro and 6s pro, goes up to$800 for the sapphire editions, $750 for the 6x pro and even higher for the 6x pro solar at $1000 and $1150 for the titanium edition.

Garmin has overhauled the design of the Fenix 6 with each member being slimmer than its predecessor plus a wider display that lets you see more at a glance. The 51mm version- 6x pro and 6x pro solar have the biggest 1.4 inches display, 1.3 inches for the 47mm version, and 1.2 inches for the 42mm version which includes the 6s and 6s pro.
Transflective memory-in-display (MIP) still powers the display of the various members of the Fenix 6 which is very bright and easy to read outdoors. Also, Fiber-reinforced polymer with metal rear cover has been used for the casing, while the bezel is stainless with the option of DLC coated steel for the Pro editions.
Garmin still stick to non-touchscreen support as each of the Fenix 6 lacks touchscreen support, you’ll have to rely on the 5 buttons that still makes these lots very easy to navigate. And the new widget that allows you to add up to 6 or 8 data fields makes it even easier to find your favorite features.
The Fenix 6 is now more durable with Corning Gorilla glass 3 manning the display on each member, and a more premium sapphire crystal glass for the Pro editions.
Straps come in different sizes, 20mm for the 42mm version, 22mm for the 47mm and 26mm for the 51mm. Straps are interchangeable and are available in different materials.
There are lots of watch face to choose from, you can as well create custom watch faces using the Garmin connect store.
Garmin has increased the storage capacity of Fenix 6 with the Pro editions having twice the storage capacity of Fenix 5 Plus which means you can now take more music with you on the go. The Basic editions lack any significant storage capacity and as such don’t support onboard music storage.
Each member of the Fenix 6 is rated 10ATM which means water resistance up to 100 meters. Thus, it’s safe to wear the Fenix 6 under the rain, to the shower, pool or the ocean without worrying about the device getting damaged.
Also, Fenix 6 has been tested accordingly to the US military grade standards for thermal, shock and water resistance which makes each member of the Fenix 6 a more durable device.
The Fenix 6 series have longer battery life than the Fenix 5 series thanks to the new battery management features that include power manager, power modes, expedition mode, and ultra-low battery saver mode.
The power manager feature will allow you to adjust features based on your preference, while the power mode feature allows you to create custom battery mode. The expedition mode introduced in the MARQ series will see the Fenix 6 last for weeks. It’s a low power GPS reference mode that ensures you can go longer.
The ultra-low battery saver mode will deactivate heart rate tracking as well as other power-consuming features but will keep the Fenix 6 going for weeks.
Like every other GPS multisport smartwatches from Garmin, each member of the Fenix 6 series is fitness-focused and well equipped to track your active life.

Each member of the Fenix 6 is equipped with Bluetooth and ANT+ to keep you connected to all that matters to you. Fenix 6 is compatible with both android and iOS devices which upon successful connection will keep you updated when there’s a new notification on your phone.
You can respond with texts or reject phone calls with texts, but these features are only supported on Android devices. You can also control music on your phone.
The Pro editions come with Wi-Fi which the Basic editions lack. NFC chip which supports Garmin Pay is available on each member of the Fenix 6 which allows you to make payment on the go directly from the watch.
