Samsung Galaxy watch active vs Garmin Vivoactive 3 Music vs Fossil Gen 4 Sport – The Difference?

Features compared

  • Design and Display

  • One common thing about the design of these three smartwatches, is that we’ve three watches that look stylish (whatever your definition of stylish could mean).

However, the Galaxy watch active takes it a bit further with this really exceptional design that leaves it with the sleekest and classiest appearance. Not forgetting, that it has all the nifty-gritty of a true smartwatch that’s just the perfect fit for women.

The reinforced stainless steel body builds of the Galaxy watch active also adds the premium tag. It’s a true premium smartwatch, while not forgetting that the Vivoactive 3 Music also comes close with stylish and elegant appearance.

On the other hand, the Gen 4 Sport lacks that premium appearance. The nylon build isn’t helping matter (it looks cheap), although a very stylish and fashionable watch.

Going by the design and appearance, we’ve got a Galaxy watch active and Vivoactive 3 music that both look great in the gym and in the office (a great bargain), while the Gen 4 sport is a more perfect fit for sports activities and also look great as casual wear.

Talk about the display, we’ve AMOLED manning the display of the Gen 4 Sport and the Galaxy watch active with a bit of contrast, in this case, Super AMOLED. Both AMOLED variants offer a rich display that’s more interactive and very lively too with the super AMOLED consuming a bit less of battery compared to AMOLED.

Transflective memory-in-pixel display technology powers the Vivoactive 3 music display – it offers a great display that’s bright and easily visible under sunlight, but compared to AMOLED, it isn’t as rich and interactive. The color depth is far less from what you get on AMOLED powered display.

  • Fitness Tracking

  • Like we’d pointed out earlier these three are fitness focused and stand out as some of the best choices for tracking your active life.

Each of these three is a great choice for fitness tracking – can track your sleep, heart rate monitoring, calories, steps, sedentary reminder and more with slight differences in fitness tracking features/modalities.

While the Galaxy watch active comes preloaded with 39 sport modes, the Vivoactive 3 music has 15 preloaded sport modes and the Gen 4 sport offers about 10 preloaded sport modes.

On the other hand, going by the appearance and body build, the Gen 4 sport seems to be the most perfect fit to wear during your workout. However, the weight and size of the Galaxy watch active actually contradict that initial claim. I would say it’s the most perfect fit for sporty activities.

  • Operating System

  • Both the Galaxy watch active and the Vivoactive 3 music run on their respective proprietary operating system while the Gen 4 Sport runs on a much improved Wear OS platform.

One outstanding thing about the Wear OS platform is that it’s versatile and offers you more access to your favorite third-party apps, thus giving it an edge over other proprietary platforms, but in terms of user experience satisfaction, it isn’t that much any better.

The Tizen OS has improved over the years since the switch from Android Wear – more apps have been added and as well as continuous updates suggest that the switch was for the good.

  • Media

  • While each of these three will allow you store your favorite tracks on the watch, its only the Galaxy watch active that has a loudspeaker that allows you play music anywhere.

It also has a microphone that allows you access to the not so outstanding Bixby, while the Gen 4 Sport also comes with a microphone that allows you access to a much improved and easily accessible Google Assistant.

The Vivoactive lacks a loudspeaker, neither does it come with a microphone.

  • Battery Life

For a fitness smartwatch, long battery life is key and ensures you could go longer on a single charge. In that regard, the Vivoactive 3 music has a clear advantage over the Galaxy watch active and the Gen 4 Sport.

The Vivoactive 3 music lasts about 5 days or more on regular usage, while with GPS active and playing music simultaneously, you get about 4 hours of battery life or more.

The Galaxy watch active on the hand will fetch you about 2 – 4 days battery life on regular (also great), while the Gen 4 Sport which is powered by the Snapdragon 3100 chip doesn’t seem to deliver that much longer battery life despite being powered by the Snapdragon 3100 chip which is taunted to elongate battery life of the next generation of Wear OS smartwatches.

The Gen 4 Sport on regular usage last about a day at most. You will need to charge it up at least once in a day to keep it on.

Which Should You Buy?

As per design and features, the Galaxy watch active has an edge over the other two. It’s also slightly cheaper.

The only shortfall on the Galaxy watch active is the lower battery life which is still impressive when compared to other close competitors.

The Galaxy watch active is no doubt the best choice, it’s the most stylish, the sleekest, the classiest and a perfect fit for any occasion. It’s also a comprehensive fitness tracker – offering support for more sports modes than the other two while also having an impressive battery life. It offers the best value for money.

On the other hand, the Vivoactive 3 music has a more impressive battery life while not forgetting that it also features robust fitness tracking capabilities that makes it the best choice for fitness enthusiasts who engage in extreme workout activities. It’s a great choice for triathlon athletes and the likes.

The Fossil Gen 4 Sport is no doubt a great choice, it’s a fashionable and colorful smartwatch with a nice design that’s a perfect fit for the gym.

Here is a summary;

SAMSUNG GALAXY WATCH ACTIVE A more comprehensive choice with outstanding aesthetics and lots of features too while offering a somewhat long battery life that lets you go over a day on a single charge. It gives the best value for money.
GARMIN VIVOACTIVE 3 MUSIC A comprehensive choice for fitness tracking with a longer battery life. A great choice for triathlon sports and long duration sport activities.
FOSSIL GEN 4 SPORT Also a great choice, a stylish and fashionable watch that’s a perfect wear for sport activities.

Our Pick

The design and size of the Galaxy watch active is actually outstanding, it best fit our definition of a smartwatch for women, while not forgetting it’s also loaded with features. It’s our preferred choice.
