Fossil Gen 4 explorist vs Gen 3 explorist features Compared

What's The Difference?
  • Design
  • The major difference between Fossil Gen 4 explorist and Gen 3 explorist is the design plus the Gen 4 has GPS, HRM and NFC inbuilt, hardware components that are not included in the Gen 3 explorist.

Fossil Gen 4 Explorist is slightly smaller than its predecessor. The Gen 4 has a smaller case size of 45mm while Gen 3 has a bigger case size of 46mm. However, the Gen 3 with a thickness size of 12.5mm is less thick and slimmer than the Gen 4 which has a thickness of 13mm. Perhaps this is because of the Gen 4 houses GPS, HRM and NFC inside. Overall, it is still sleek.

  • Connectivity
  • The Gen 4 explorist has some hardware components which are lacking in Gen 3. It has GPS, HRM, and NFC built-in, these components can’t be found in the Gen 3. This means you will have to connect to your phone GPS to track outdoor events which are not a great idea in certain situations. Automatic heart rate monitoring is not possible with Gen 3 and of course, you won’t be able to make mobile payments on Gen 3.

  • Fitness Tracking
  • For the fact that the Gen 3 explorist lacks GPS and HRM inbuilt makes it a very bad choice for fitness-minded folks while on the other hand, Gen 4 explorist which has GPS and HRM inbuilt plus other additional sensors is a perfect choice for fitness tracking.

Also, Gen 4 explorist rated 3ATM is water-resistant up to 30 meters underwater making it a great choice for tracking your swimming activities while Gen 3 explorist rated IP67 is water resistant up to 1 meter and definitely won’t survive any adventure in the pool or ocean.

  • Battery

There is no much difference in the battery life between Gen 4 and Gen 3 explorist, it is still the same one-day battery life on mixed usage.

Which Should You Buy?

If you already own the Gen 3 explorist, then an upgrade is necessary to experience the full potential of a modern-day smartwatch. The Gen 4 explorist gives the best value for money, the price difference between these two is about $50. Moreover, Gen 4 has all the standard sensors a modern-day smartwatch should have and it also has a better elegant, sophisticated and fascinating design.

However, if you really like the design of the Gen 3 explorist and making for reasons best known to you, then there you go. It will pass for an entry-level smartwatch, but it is not a wise choice considering that Gen 4 has better features.
