The Difference

Features Compared
  1. Design
  2. One distinguishing factor among this three smartwatches is the physical appearance. Fossil sport going by its name has a sporty design which features an aluminum casing and thermoplastic back cover while the Gen 4 explorist and gen 3 are made of stainless steel material which qualifies the two as classic smartwatches. Besides that, the new Fossil sport and gen 4 have captivating designs that are both elegant and classy. The Fossil sport will pass as a perfect casual wear which is also classy.

Fossil sport is the sleekest and slimmest, its 12mm thick compared to 13mm of Gen 4 explorist and 12.5 mm of Gen 3.

  3. Connectivity
  4. There is no NFC or GPS found in the Gen 3, but the Fossil sport and Gen 4 explorist have NFC, GPS built in. Worthy to note that the Fossil sport has a higher version of Bluetooth which means faster connections.

  5. Water Resistance
  6. While Fossil Gen 3 and Gen 4 explorist are rated IP67 which means they are only water resistant up to 1 meter, the new Fossil sport has a water resistant rating of 5ATM which means its water resistant up to 50 meters. In other words, the Fossil sport is a perfect choice for tracking your swimming activities, unfortunately you can’t do that with the other two.

  7. Battery
  8. Like we mentioned earlier, Fossil was not going to miss the party for too long. The release of GEN 4 explorist missed Snapdragon 3100 but not with Fossil sport. It is Fossil’s first smartwatch to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 which promises a better efficiency that improves battery life a little longer. That promise is evident in the new Fossil sport which has a slightly longer battery life than the Gen 4 explorist/venture and the Gen 3. On mixed usage, the Fossil sport lasts about 20 -24 hours while you barely get a full day usage with the other two.

Another improvement is the fast battery charging feature of the Sport, it takes about 1 hour to charge a completely depleted battery or at most 1.30 minutes while its takes about 2 hours to charge the Fossil Gen 4 explorist/venture and over two hours to charge the Gen 3.

  9. Operating system

While Fossil Gen 3 and Gen 4 explorist/venture are powered by the outdated Snapdragon 2100, the new Fossil sport is powered by Snapdragon 3100. This is the major factor that sets the Fossil sport apart from the other fossil smartwatches. Like mentioned earlier the new chip promises better fitness tracking accuracy and longer battery life.

Which Should You Buy?

Unless you just like the design of the Gen 3, the main contention is between Fossil Gen 4 explorist/venture and Fossil Gen 4 sport, both represents high-end mainstream smartwatches that have all the standard software and hardware a modern smartwatch should have. However the new Fossil sport has an advantage of being the first of Fossil smartwatch to be powered by the new Snapdragon 3100 chip which sees it having a slightly longer battery life and better fitness tracking accuracy, but not a better design.

The Fossil Gen 4 Explorist/venture has better designs that is classier, elegant and adds more glamour to your personality than the Fossil sport.

So, it all boils down to what your preferences are, If you are after a smartwatch with a classy design that adds prestige to your personality then the Fossil Gen 4 Explorist/venture will be the perfect choice. Otherwise, if you will are after a fitness smartwatch that has a sporty appearance then the Gen 4 sport will be the perfect choice. Moreover you have a slightly longer battery life with the Fossil sport.
